Te Koki, New Zealand School of Music and the Embajada de España (Spanish Embassy in New Zealand) are delighted to bring Spanish piano legend Guillermo González to Wellington audiences. He will perform the 'Iberia' suite by Isaac Albéniz, a suite of 12 'impressions' considered to be the Spanish composer's final masterpiece.

Guillermo González was born in Tenerife, and is considered one of Spain's greatest artists and a prominent champion of Spanish music. He was chosen to represent the entire Hispanic world in the international cultural festival held during the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, He has served as professor at the Conservatorio Superior de Madrid since 1975, and has given recitals and concerts throughout the world, appearing with leading orchestras and conductors in Spain, France and China.

His many recordings include releases of music by Alexander Scriabin, Ernesto Hallfter, Manuel de Falla, Antón García Abril, Zulema de la Cruz, Carlos Cruz Castro, José Luís Turina and Teobaldo Power, for which he received the Premio Nacional del Disco in 1980. Since 1990 he has presided over the Concurso Internacional de Piano de Jaén, receiving a gold medal for his work with this organization and several music schools in his native Spain have been named after him. In 1991 Guillermo González was awarded the Premio Nacional de Música, the most prestigious prize awarded to musicians in Spain; his numerous prizes and awards include the medal of the Village of Garachico 1996, and the Premio a la Interpretación Musical de la Fundación CEOE. and in 2007 an honorary doctorate from the University of Granada, with the Albéniz Medal presented in 2009 in Camprodón, that composer's birthplace.

While visiting NZSM, Guillermo will also conduct a masterclass session with NZSM piano students. This will take place in the same venue on Thursday evening, 22 March, and public observers are welcome to attend at no charge.
