Te Kōkī, New Zealand School of Music is delighted to welcome Arts Laureate Michael Houstoun to perform a very special concert.

Michael Houstoun will need little introduction to New Zealand audiences as one of this country's most accomplished and acclaimed musicians. By his own admission, Michael has 'fallen in love' with the 'Goldberg Variations' by J S Bach and in this concert he will perform the entire work on the NZSM's new Steinway piano without an interval.

The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988, is a work for harpsichord by Johann Sebastian Bach, consisting of an aria and a set of 30 variations. First published in 1741, the work is the last part of a series collectively called Clavierübung and is considered by many as the most serious and ambitious composition ever written for harpsichord. Based on a single ground bass theme, the variations display not only Bach's exceptional knowledge of diverse styles of music of the day but also his exquisite performing techniques. While many theories abound as to hidden meanings and esoteric layers within Bach's works – the Goldberg Variations more than most – the work is undoubtedly profound and appeals to audiences at many levels: emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual.

Bookings for this concert are highly recommended as seating is limited by the venue. Remaining tickets will be available at the door: Adults $25, Seniors and Students $10 (NZSM staff and students: free)
