The 2nd, 3rd and 4th year voice students of the NZSM Classical Voice programme present scenes from seven different operas: from the well known to some unusual ensemble gems.

"The scenes are especially chosen to suit their voices and burgeoning acting skills," explains Margaret Medlyn, NZSM Head of Classical performance, Voice. "Learning to deal with big personalities is only part of an opera singer's job - add to that the stage personas that the students assume and the process makes for a lot of fun and challenges!

"These excerpts emphasise the intricacies of personal relationships promising a wonderful evening of entertainment for Opera-lovers and showcasing a new generation of young singers including Amelia Ryman, Angelique Macdonald, Isabella Moore and Tom Atkins."

The operatic excepts being presented include:
- Mozart: scenes from 'The Marriage of Figaro', 'The Magic Flute' and 'The Impresario'
- Puccini: scene from 'La Boheme'
- Barber: 'A Hand of Bridge'
- Donizetti: scene from 'Anna Bolena'
- Johann Strauss: scenes from 'Die Fledermaus'

The scenes have been creatively designed and set by director Jacqueline Coats, assisted by Maaike Christie-Beekman, and accompanied by the redoubtable Mark Dorrell on the piano.

The Classical Voice students from Te Kōkī, New Zealand School of Music have gained a justifiably fine reputation for operatic performance. The School's intention is to produce a full scale opera every second year (eg the acclaimed productions of Handel's 'Semele' in 2009, Britten's 'Midsummer Night's Dream' in 2011) and to produce an evening of staged scenes from the operatic repertoire every other year. Through these 'scenes' students continue to gain a real stage experience of performing opera complete with lighting, makeup, costumes and props while being able to explore the broad repertoire they need to develop into first class singers.
