NZTrio - Justine Cormack (violin), Ashley Brown (cello) and Sarah Watkins (piano) - New Zealand’s foremost piano trio bring their Art3 series to Wellington for the first time.

Building on the success of their 2012 New Zealand International Arts Festival concert - Dreamscapes - the trio are keen to share more sublime piano trio music with Wellington audiences.

Art3 - NZTrio performs in visual arts spaces - kicked off in Auckland earlier this year at Lopdell House Gallery, and the trio are keen to develop more opportunities to surround themselves with the best visual art in the country and perform in the exciting acoustics of gallery spaces.

“Hearing beautiful and evocative music played live by the country’s leading musicians in inspiring surroundings lifts the audience experience to another level’ says Vanessa Zigliani, the trio’s manager. NZTrio is committed to making new and classical music accessible and relevant to everyone - from experts to first-timers - by performing in spaces that are welcoming, approachable and unexpected. The trio add their personal touch by introducing the programme and joining the audience afterwards over a glass of wine.

The programme will allow Wellington audiences to be transported by the sultry sounds of Spain with Joachim Turina’s Piano Trio No. 2, then treated to some high energy, cutting edge new works from Australia and New Zealand - including the Wellington premiere of local Karlo Margetic’s Lightbox, before delving into the romantic, bohemian world of Antonin Dvořák.

Margetic’s bold new work drew critical acclaim when it was performed by NZTrio in its world premiere in Auckland earlier in the year: “...a high-adrenalin jaunt... Margetic stages some mighty eruptions and the calm patches between the storms are exquisitely drawn... (NZTrio) have created a storehouse of taonga, of which Karlo Margetic’s Lightbox is one of the most treasurable” - July 2012 William Dart, The NZ Herald.

This year, NZTrio’s commitment to New Zealand music was acknowledged by the Composers Association of New Zealand with the CANZ/KBB Music citation for services to New Zealand music.

One review of NZTrio’s 2012 NZIAF concert - ‘Dreamscapes’ included:
“This festival-ending concert...packed a mighty punch in repertoire of ear-tingling sounds...a concert of real substance and reward, blessed with superlative playing from all concerned. None of this music is easy to play, yet everyone displayed a virtuosity that allowed the music the freedom to speak. And speak it did.” - March 2012 John Button, Dominion Post
