A significant musical milestone will be commemorated on September 22nd when the Orlando Singers of Auckland celebrate forty years of singing with a special concert.

The choir originally began in 1972 as an informal group of friends, and over its four decades has developed into a busy chamber choir with regular performances in Auckland and many other parts of New Zealand. The choir has frequently broadcast on Radio New Zealand, appeared on television, performed at music festivals and toured within New Zealand and overseas. In 1989 they toured New Zealand for the Chamber Music Federation, in 2007 they represented New Zealand at the Festival of Voices in Hobart, Tasmania and in 2010 they were invited to sing at a choral festival in New Caledonia.

The ensemble performs music from the choral treasures of five centuries, and has often had music written for it. Composer Neil Colquhoun arranged his Songs for a Young Country (New Zealand folksongs) for the group. In 1986 the choir gave the first New Zealand performance of Herbert Howells' "Requiem" (a composition which features in the jubilee concert). In 2002 the group was seen on television round the world when they led off an international sequence of commemorative performances of Mozart's famous "Requiem" on the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York.

The programme of the jubilee concert will include music by Howells, Mendelssohn and Elgar, and will also include the premiere of a work specially written for the Orlando Singers - "Wild Daisies" by John Wells, in which Dr. Wells sets the work of four New Zealand poets. The choir's programme will also feature emerging artist Chase Douglas who will sing tenor solos.
