Phil Garland is a well-known folk music icon in New Zealand, both as a musician and a collector and preserver of New Zealand’s folk music heritage. In 1967 he started the Christchurch Folk Centre and founded the Christchurch Folk Music Club. Phil‘s long musical career continues – he performs both locally and overseas, writes and records, and collects New Zealand’s folksong heritage. He has been associated with bands Bush Telegraph, Canterbury Crutchings Bush and Ceilidh Band, and the Canterbury Bush Orchestra. Among his well-known songs are "Down a Country Road I Know" and "Tuapeka Gold". "The Singing Kiwi" is a songbook of Kiwi folksongs and Phil’s originals.

Phil has often been described as "A National Living Treasure" and "New Zealand's foremost and finest heritage balladeer".

As a Kiwi balladeer and singing historian, Phil is constantly in demand, teaching, writing, touring and performing. His music transcends many boundaries, as demonstrated by the increasing number of local and international artists currently interpreting his work.

The Southland Times has dubbed him "A Country Music Legend", while a reviewer in the Christchurch Press described his songs as "Crafted Colonial Storytelling". Phil was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007 by ROCKONZ, the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame based in Christchurch. Following that success, his album "Southern Odyssey" won best folk album at the N.Z. Music Awards for 2007.

Phil’s major opus "Faces in the Firelight" was published by Steele Roberts in 2009 and looks at the New Zealand story through collected folksong, oral history, yarns and back country verse. Kiwi Pacific Records recently published "The Phil Garland Songbook" which is a collection of mainly original songs recorded over the last fifteen years. Phil has just released a new album "Damper, Duff & Doughboys", a themed collection of songs from rural New Zealand.

Phil will have a brand new album and songbook for sale on the night.

Complimentary supper around 9pm.
