Picture This, a survey of the Hocken's recent art acquisitions, presents audiences with a rare insight into how the Pictures collection is currently being developed. Bringing together some of the art purchases and gifts from the past five years, the array of work on display celebrates the strength and diversity of contemporary art practice.

Rather than being built around a single thematic premise, this exhibition brings together a diverse range of work that explores multiple concerns and focuses on individual artistic achievements. Certain connections and groupings do emerge, however. Issues such as the obsessive nature of art practice may be observed in Nick Austin’s Lettuce Poems and Kushana Bush’s painstakingly painted Forward Fold, while Eddie Clemens’ Fibre Optic Broom #1 and Joanna Langford’s installation Baltic Wanderer both mix ‘lo-fi’ materials with high-tech componentry. Other artists whose work is included in the show Shane Cotton, Greg Semu, Russell Moses, Billy Apple, Chris Heaphy, Ann Shelton, Neil Pardington and Gary McMillan.
