Mulled wine concerts fundraiser: country music and blues stars visit Paekakariki.

The Mulled Wine Concert Series in Paekakariki normally features classical music, but once a year organiser Mary Gow lets her hair down and puts on a fund-raising event starring top musicians from other musical worlds. The 2012 fundraiser will feature famous Dutch jazz-blues pianist Robert Scharrenborg and Kiwi-born country music star Roger Tibbs with his band. The popular Kapiti artist Sonia Savage will be exhibiting her paintings at the concert.

Robert is paying a return visit after featuring in a very successful concert here in 2010. “Robert is an old friend from Europe” said Mary, “and when I heard he wanted to come back to New Zealand, I couldn't resist the idea of putting him onstage again”

Scharrenborg has been playing and singing his way around Europe – firstly in Holland, but later as far afield as Moscow and Prague – since the early '70s. His sessions with Amsterdam combo the Bourbon Street Unplugged Band are legendary (and can still be viewed on YouTube). His wide repertoire of blues and soul music can't fail to provide a great experience to NZ'ers at this rare appearance.

Representing the best in country music, Roger Tibbs was born in Lower Hutt. Music has always been a natural part of his life. He loved listening to his mother sing and his father playing his beat-up guitar “thumb-style.” Roger formed a band as a young man, entered several country music contests, and before long was taking top honours at music competitions across New Zealand. Performing on TV's “That’s Country” served as a springboard to a larger fan base and gave him exposure across the entire country. Soon he was recording and has won the Tamworth Gold Guitar award for the highest-selling album in Australasia. Being invited to perform at the huge Calgary Stampede was Roger's first experience performing for a crowd of more than 10,000 fans and proved to be the catalyst for a career launch into North America. During his 2010 trip, he was inducted into America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame.

The Mulled Wine Concert Series in Paekakariki received rapturous critical acclaim and has been hailed by critics as a noteworthy addition to the Wellington music scene. The 2012 season opens on 18 March featuring the outstanding pianist Michael Endres.
