Where: Rotoroa Island, Rotoroa Island, Rotoroa Island, Auckland

Restrictions: All Ages

Ticket Information:

  • Adult volunteer (return): $29.40
  • Additional fees may apply

Listed by: RotoroaIsland

If you're keen on conservation and fancy a day on Rotoroa helping plant some of the 40 varieties of plant that have been reintroduced to Rotoroa, then join Treescape ecologist Jo Ritchie, when we hold our last volunteer planting day of the year.

How to book:
360 Discovery Cruises are providing special discounted ferry fares for volunteers (only $29 return for adults). Numbers are limited to 20, so be quick and book online: select Auckland to Rotoroa return, and enter ROTVOL as a promotion code to get your special ferry fare, or call 360 Discovery on 0800 360 3472. Make sure you mention you are heading to the island for the volunteer day to get the discounted rate.

What to bring:
Your lunch and plenty of water to drink; sturdy footwear (tramping boots or good grip sand shoes - no open toe shoes); several layers of clothes and wet weather gear; sunscreen and sun hat; gardening gloves and spade if you have them. Please bring any medication if you need it as there are no pharmacy supplies on the island (especially if you are an allergy or hay fever sufferer as you will be working among bush).

What we’ll provide:
Gloves and spades, if you don’t have any; plants; tea, coffee and water; supervisors with plenty of interesting stories and good humour!

Plan for the day
8:45am: Volunteers depart on the 360 Discovery Cruise;
10am: Arrive on Rotoroa, welcome introduction, safety briefing, plan for the day;
10:30am: Volunteer work begins (break for lunch, tea and coffee at 12:30);
3pm: Finish work and explore the island;
4:30pm: Special presentation on restoration of Rotoroa Island;
5:15pm: Return to Auckland on the 360 Discovery ferry.

Note: Not suitable for young children, those 8 years and older are welcome however they must be supervised.

While unlikely to cancel unless terrible weather, here’s how you can be sure it’s going ahead. Check our website or Facebook Page where we’ll post any updates. If you are unsure, please call 021 2408777.

Supervision and guidance on the day will be provided by Rotoroa Island caretakers and Jo Ritchie, a specialist in restoration ecology. A special thank you to 360 Discovery for providing a generous discount for our Volunteers.

We're keen to build a list of people who'd like to volunteer regularly or know about upcoming days, so if you fit this bill, then email us at, and put 'volunteer' in the subject heading.
