Sam Hunt and Gary McCormick On the Road. Poems and Laughter.

Sam Hunt celebrated his 66th birthday on July 4th (American Independence Day) with a new collection of poems.

Knucklebones: Poems 1962-2012 appeared in shops on the 4th of August.

“Fifty years of the little buggers!” he says.

Assisted by old mate Gary McCormick (Hunt briefly taught at Mana College in Porirua, where McCormick was Head Boy). Hunt will do a show at the Old Library on Saturday 8 September.

“Sam was a very conspicuous presence upon the stage among the other teachers at morning assembly,” says McCormick. “The coat and trousers were a bit on the short side and he had the first pair of very pointed boots I had ever seen.” The pair were put together for a tour in the late Seventies, by what was then the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council. The tour which continued for about three years.

“They were magical days on the Kiwi pub circuit,” recalls McCormick.

“Pubs were full of great bands – and poetry six days a week. In my mind it was a blur of great parties and breeze block wall motels.”

The pair re-united for the Roaring Forties tour in the early nineties – the subject a of a large book and a television documentary.

When not on the road,Sam continues to haunt remote parts – currently the salt river, Arapaoa, of the Kaipara, where he lives with his younger son, Alf.

“ I did a show with Mayor Tim Shadbolt at the Old Library. It is the perfect venue. I’m looking forward to introducing Sam to the fun!”
