Song of the Eel are:

Noel Clayton (guitar)
Noel is a Wellington guitar legend. He has performed with many bands in the last two decades, including his own fine trio (‘Eel’) with Patrick Bleakley and Chris O’Connor. Noel influenced a generation of guitar players through his astonishing performances at the Lido cafe during a long-time residency with the ‘Doodletown Boptet’. Noel has also been a frequent collaborator with Anthony Donaldson (in the ‘Razorblades’, also touring with the ‘Village of the Idiots’) as well as with Patrick Bleakley and Jonathan Crayford, and John Bell in ‘Sanctus’, performing around NZ and at the Melbourne and Wellington International Jazz Festivals.

Patrick Bleakley (bass)
Patrick began his performance career with a ‘dream’ apprenticeship as bass player in Bruno Lawrence’s ‘BLERTA’. If you aren’t familiar with ‘BLERTA’ then you could get a quick overview by watching the recent film: ’Blerta, the return Trip’. More recently, Patrick has been collaborating with Jonathan Crayford, Noel Clayton and Chris O’Connor. Most recently, Bleakley has been working with Lucien Johnstone, featuring in Geoff Murphy’s film ‘Tales of Mystery and Imagination’ (music composed by Johnstone featuring the ‘Village of the Idiots’) and with Johnstone and drummer John Rae in ‘The Troubles.’

Chris O’Connor (drums)
Chris is one of the most in-demand musicians in the known cosmos at present. He has the ability to lift almost any genre of musical performance to a somewhat higher plane! For this reason, Chris has worked in a huge number of ensembles, notably: Don McGlashan’s ‘Seven sisters’, ‘SJD’, ‘The Fingers’, ‘The Superstars of Westlynn’, ‘The Spoilers of Utopia’, Andrew Keoghan, Carolina Moon. He has also worked on many theatre productions.

John Bell (vibraphone)
John Bell is one of the leading purveyors of tuned percussion in the land. He leads his own brass and percussion based group: ’The Spoilers of Utopia’ as well as running a regular performance night at the Wine Cellar: ‘T Party’(Tuesdays!) John also collaborated with the other ‘Eel songers’ in: ‘Sanctus’, the ‘Village of the Idiots’, and the ‘Razorblades’ as well as touring with Chris O’Connor to Korea with the ‘Lippizannas’ (2007).
