The race is on to find the district’s canine equivalent of Phar Lap as the countdown starts to this year’s local equivalent of the Melbourne Cup – Gisborne’s Terrier Racing day.

People come from miles around to take their little dogs out for a day of fun and hilarity in a quest to take home the cup for the top dog, and to raise funds for breast cancer support services in Gisborne.

As well as the Cup for the fastest dog, there are prizes for the best dressed dog, best dressed owner (in keeping with the race-day tradition), best dressed couple, best dressed group, best dressed lady, best dressed man and fancy dress for children. The races will be followed by a fundraising auction and entertainment, this year featuring New Zealand’s top country singer, Tami Neilson (winner of the New Zealand Music Awards Best Country Album 2009, 2010 and 2012)

People can take advantage of the gourmet food and drinks on sale or book a table for 10, complete with three bottles of bubbles and a platter of nibbles. There will be marquees around the race track, so that everyone can socialise and enjoy a few drinks and nibbles while their dogs relax after their races.

The gates open at 10.30, and racing is due to start around 11.30am, continuing until about 5.30pm.

The races attract terriers of all sorts. There are classes for Jack Russells, Australian Terriers and Foxies, as well as a“bitsy” terrier race later in the programme for any other terrier breeds. Size restrictions are in force this year, 40 cms is the height limit.

All of them are renowned for their energetic and fearless approach to life and their strong characters, making for some hilarious antics on and around the racetrack.

All the money raised from this event goes back to women who are diagnosed with breast cancer in Gisborne. Each women receives a pack with vouchers to spend at different places around Gisborne. eg: gardening, firewood, beauty salons, natural health products and heaps of others. As well as vouchers there are a couple of very good reading books and other information that these women need to help them on their journey.

Come along and join in the fun - even if you don't have a terrier. It is a really neat fun family day out.
