Songs of Beauty - The Hutt Valley Singers’ second concert of their 2012 series.

The community choir of adult singers from all over the Hutt Valley has grown to just over 40 singers over the last couple of years and has been preparing for this concert for approximately 3 months.

Joanne Roelofs, Musical Director of the choir, selected a themed programme of songs that will be appeal to all ages. “The Concert is called For the Beauty of the Earth after one of our pieces. But every song has the word beauty, beautiful or love somewhere in the lyrics,” Mrs Roelofs explains. “The concept grew from a discussion with our pianist Karen Boyce who arranged two songs with this theme especially for the choir. We are looking forward to premiering one of these arrangements in this concert and it has been wonderful for the choir to be able to utilise talent and skills from within. There are songs from Musicals (Godspell, and Oklahoma), as well as Madrigals, Disney and a selection of contemporary songs made famous by the likes of U2 and Joe Cocker. Some songs are unaccompanied, and one by New Zealand composer David Hamilton has a flute part played by Sue Loftus – another example of musical skill from with the choir. Many choir members have a special contribution with solo lines and some speaking parts,” says Mrs Roelofs.

Special guests include local teenager Rebecka Cox singing A Poor Wayfaring Stranger and drummer Jarrod Scott. Other soloists include Martin Haua, Mandy Lapsley.

Ticket sales for the concert will be available at the door.
