A Glorious Uncertainty explores the life and work of pioneering studio potter Elizabeth Matheson (1890 - 1978). An independent spirit with an enquiring mind, Matheson remains one of the unsung heroes of New Zealand art history.

Matheson began her artistic career in the 1920s as a metalworker based in the creative enclave of Havelock North. By the 1930s she had made the move to ceramics, and in 1940 was propelled into the public eye at the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition.

While Matheson has received some attention for her contribution to New Zealand ceramics history, little attention has been placed on her wider story. A Glorious Uncertainty reveals the early years of Matheson’s career, including rare examples of metalwork and early ceramics. The exhibition offers an intimate view of one of New Zealand’s pioneering crafts people, as well as the largest collection of her work ever publically assembled.

Museum entry prices apply.
Exhibition runs to 18 January 2015.

21 September 2013 – 18 January 2015
