This memoir by acclaimed novelist Lloyd Jones was born of first-hand observations of post-earthquake Christchurch and the many personal histories that were destroyed and reshaped. The devastation stimulated disquieting thoughts of his childhood and his lack of a sense of past. His father was an orphan; his mother was abandoned by her mother. Present and past are woven together as Jones describes growing up in a modest Wellington suburb with parents who did their best to conceal the damage inflicted on them, and recounts his physical and spiritual journey of discovery. Though deeply personal, his story evokes a picture of New Zealand family life familiar to many and probes deep human instincts and insecurities.

Lloyd Jones is the author of many novels, including Hand Me Down World, Biografi and The Book of Fame. Mister Pip was a finalist for the 2007 Man Booker Prize and a film adaptation is soon to be released.
