Forty-five years ago in 1968, Roy Good & J S Parker, two painting graduates and friends from Ilam School of Art, had their first exhibition.

The exhibition was held at the Vulcan Gallery in Auckland which had been established by another Ilam graduate painter – Alan Pearson. For Roy Good and J S Parker, it was the beginning of what were to be long careers in the visual arts.

This year in May sees a reunion of the two abstractionists, exhibiting new work at Artis Gallery in Auckland.

Abstract Reunion follows retrospectives and survey shows for both artists in recent years – Good in 2007 and 2011 and Parker in 2009. Although the work of both Good and Parker fits comfortably into the non objective field of painting, they have come together from different directions. It is this contrast that provides a real interest to this exhibition.

Parker has deployed gestural abstraction and more recently, a reductive approach with his ongoing investigation of 'place', which has been inspired by living in Marlborough for most of his career.

Parker’s work takes more of a poetic direction, with the extensive series of ‘Plain Song’ painting, which are most indicative of his style and strength of statement over recent years.

In contrast, Good has become well-known for a more formal approach, which utilises pure geometricism. During the 1970’s Good was part of a small group of Auckland artists that instigated an alternative conversation in painting. This alternative was a strong contrast to the then prevailing figurative styles in New Zealand art.

These dialogues in paint continue for Good and Parker – and although their visual means may have differed over the years, both seek in their work the sublime objectives that the best abstraction can provide.
