In an historic occasion for the Australian Football League, the first ever premiership match between AFL clubs will be staged outside Australia in Wellington, on ANZAC Day 2013.

The St Kilda Saints will play against the Sydney Swans the first ever game played outside of Australia for premiership points. Sydney are the reigning AFL premiers (in Kiwi lingo the AFL champions), and St Kilda are from Melbourne.

This is an opportunity to watch world-class athletes at the peak of their game. It’s a highly skillful game that’s best watched live. It’s an up tempo and requires skill, strength and stamina.

AFL is the world’s 4th most popular spectator sport in terms of average match attendance after the NFL (American Football), Bundesliga (Football, Germany) and English Premiership (Football)

Council’s Sports Portfolio Leader John Morrison says the match offered Wellington the chance to be at the centre of an historic occasion for the world’s fourth most popular spectator sport.
