A.J. Leonard – The Uke of Oz with Jenny Rowlands on Cello

AJ Leonard is Australia’s finest ukulele player...

AJ’s music is original and at the same time tantalizingly familiar, reinventing elements of romance and nostalgia. It is ukulele music for the 21st century.

From the Ukulele Picnic of Hawaii to the New York Ukulele Festival and numerous folk and ukulele festivals in Australia, AJ Leonard has charmed audiences with his evocative and captivating performances.

AJ started playing ukulele 30 years ago in Melbourne when there were very few players in Australia, learning specialist techniques from one of the veterans of the ukulele heyday of the 1920s. AJ himself now gives workshops to aspiring ukulele players in Australia and North America.

AJ’s eclectic style is evident in his eight albums of ukulele music – in styles ranging from The Beach Boys to The Shadows, from traditional Hawaiian music to shades of the Orient and contemporary trance – you can listen to samples here.

AJ will be appearing with his wife and accompanist Jenny Rowlands on cello. After attending the Victorian College of the Arts, Jenny studied classical cello overseas. A love of all types of music led her to perform with such people as James Taylor, Paul Simon and Phil Collins. Her classical background combined with influences from jazz and pop produce a combination of sweet melody and great groove.

Don’t miss the Uke of Oz - it should be a great evening! Biscuits will be served at half-time.
