New Zealand's young internationally acclaimed opera star Anna Leese will give a solo recital for the Waikanae Music Society.

Anna launched her career with wins in the Sister Mary Leo Scholarship, the Mobil Song Quest and the McDonalds Aria Scholarship in Sydney. She studied at the Royal College of Music in London and got her first big break as Musetta in La Boheme at Covent Garden when she was only 24. Since then she has been able to support herself through concert and opera work in the UK and Europe and has toured to Canada, China, Malaysia and Korea.

Last year she earned glowing reviews from critics for her role of Tatyana in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin at Holland Park Opera in London, a role that she then sang with great success for Opera New Zealand. Later last year she also starred in Opera New Zealand's production of The Bartered Bride, again with glowing reviews. Coming up later this year are The Pearl Fishers and La Boheme in London, also Don Giovanni in Christchurch. On her return to Europe in a few weeks she will be auditioning for the famed conductor Zubin Mehta who has asked to hear her sing the role of Desdemona in Verdi's Othello.

For her Waikanae concert Anna will include arias by Mozart, songs by Schubert, Debussy and Strauss, plus the Letter Scene from Eugene Onegin and some popular favourites including Bailero from Songs of the Auvergne and Dvorak's Song to the Moon.

Accompanying Anna in this recital will be well-known pianist Terence Dennis who has recently been touring overseas as accompanist to Dame Kiri Te Kanawa.

Tickets for the concert can be bought from Waikanae New World, Raumati's Lush Gallery or from Paraparaumu Beach's Moby Dickens Books. Door sales will be available or phone 04 905 5078.

Waikanae Music Society acknowledges the support of the Deane Endowment Trust.
