Bayleys Great Classics Series: My Country

Where: Auckland Town Hall - Great Hall, 303 Queen St, CBD, Auckland

Restrictions: All Ages

Christoph Altstaedt - conductor
Ingrid Fliter - piano

Lilburn: Drysdale Overture
Chopin: Piano Concerto No. 2
Dvořák: Symphony No. 8

In this final Great Classics concert, we celebrate composers who reflect and helped define the musical character of their country. Lilburn’s Drysdale Overture is an early work, written while the composer was studying in London; it depicts memories of his homeland and of “childhood happiness”.

Brilliant Argentinian pianist Ingrid Fliter joins the orchestra for Chopin’s Piano Concerto No.2, with its echoes of the mazurkas of Poland. And Dvořák’s Eighth Symphony is unmistakably Czech, embodying the spirit and melodies of his people. Led by Christoph Altstaedt, winner of the Eugen Jochum conducting prize, this concert promises a vibrant musical voyage through some of the liveliest folk idioms of Europe.
