Blikang Dog 2013

Sat 16 Nov 2013, 10:00am

Where: Blikfang Art and Antiques, 130 Queen St, Northcote, Auckland

Restrictions: All Ages

Listed by: 1BlikfangGallery

In conjunction with Blikfang Gallery's ANIMAUX art exhibition (14 October to 18 December) we are looking for the dog that best expresses the all important 'blikfang' effect.

Blikfang, a Danish word meaning 'a trap for the eye' is embodied in all animals, and in dogs especially, with their evolved characteristics that attract an emotional response from their human companions. The eye catching features of dogs include the way they walk, their beautiful coats, their colouration and patterning, and their expressive eyes. It is important to stress we are not looking for a dog that conforms best to a breed formulation, nor one that exhibits party tricks. Social status has no part to play either, the winning dog could well be of very lowly parentage. What we are looking for is simply the eye-appeal of a star.
Our guest judge, Linda Tyler, Director, Centre for Art Studies, Auckland University will make the initial selection of 20 finalists from the photographs supplied by email or at the Blikfang Gallery or Antiques & Angels shop. The twenty finalists will be invited to our photo shoot on Saturday 26 October at Blikfang Gallery where a professional photographer will take images of your dog against themed photographic sets featuring antique furnishings, art objects, rugs and cushions, a backdrop designed to enhance the aesthetic form and qualities of your dog. These images will then form a gallery display both in the window of the Blikfang Gallery and on our Facebook page, Blikfang Art and Antiques, where the public will be invited to vote for their favourite dog. Voting can also take place at Antiques and Angels during our open hours. The Blikfang Gallery Dog of the Year 2013 will be selected by popular vote, thereby truly representing the dog with the greatest eye appeal. The Grand Parade of finalists and prize presentation will be held at Blikfang Gallery on the 16th of November.
