Centrestage Theatre’s first production for 2013 is the multi award winning Chicago. It is a worldwide favourite filled with murder, greed, corruption, violence, exploitation, adultery & treachery.

Set amidst the razzle-dazzle decadence of the 1920s, Chicago is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her.

Desperate to avoid conviction, Roxie dupes the public & the media by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids. There is jealousy and rivalry between Roxie and her fellow cellmate Velma Kelly who is herself in jail for killing her husband and sister after finding them in bed together. Both women are on death row and fighting for fame. Only one of them can be the media darling.

Chicago’s popularity rose to great heights again with the 2002 movie staring Catherine Zeta Jones, Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere and Queen Latifah. The movie won 6 Academy Awards.

Centrestage’s cast will knock your socks off with one show stopping song after the other, astonishing dance numbers and absolutely stunning costumes. Staring Emma Carr as Velma Kelly, Sophia Pederson as Roxie Hart, Leon Ruwhiu as Billy Flynn the smooth lawyer, John Fergusson as Amos Roxie’s dotting husband and some of the best dancers and singers around.

Chicago is directed by Michael Sanders of The Boy Friend, Mikado & Barnum fame. Michael is joined by Warwick Day as musical director, Jasmine Lee as vocal coach and Anna Mortlock as choreographer.
