The Friends of the APO present a programme of Viola music by Sophia Lee.
Sophia was born in 1996 in South Korea and attended the Sunhwa Art School in Korea In 2008, at the age of 12, she has made her concerto debut with Korea Academy Symphony Orchestra performing Carl Stamitz Viola Concerto. In the same year, she has won the 1st Prize at the 2008 Mozart Competition. In 2009, she has won the 1st Prize at the 2009 Seoul Academic Music Competition and as a result, she appeared as a concerto soloist with Seoul Academic Sinfonietta performing Weber Viola Concerto. In the same year, she has also won the 3rd Prize at the International Haydn Competition in Seoul.

Sophia immigrated to New Zealand in 2009 and she is currently attending Westlake Girls High School. She has studied viola with Jonghyuk Lee, Susan Bierre, Robert Ashworth and she is currently under the tutelage of Zhongxian Jin since 2010.

Sophia was the violist of Geist String Quartet from 2011-12, a winning group of the New Zealand Chamber Music Contest for two consecutive years in 2011 and 2012. As the winning group, Geist String Quartet was invited to perform at the 2012 New Zealand Music Festival in Shanghai with New Zealand pianist, John Chen. Also, in 2012, as a high school student, she was specially admitted to the School of Music of University of Auckland to perform the Dohnyani Piano Quintet with New Zealand’s first Young Steinway Artist, Jason Bae.

She was the youngest-ever member of the New Zealand National Youth Symphony Orchestra in 2010. She was also a member of Auckland Youth Symphony Orchestra in 2011. She has presented viola solo recitals in Auckland.

Sophia is the recipient of 2013 APO Secondary School Scholarship. As a result, she performed as the member of Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra on August this year.

The music will be followed by an interview with Christopher Johnstone, Fundraising manager for the APO who will talk with Barry Clapham about his life and work and his recently revised "Landscapes of New Zealand.
