Georgie Hill’s intense, small-scale watercolour paintings are the product of a carefully controlled and structured technique that works almost paradoxically to create spatial and optical uncertainties and instabilities. The patterns she employs are derived from various forms of protective colouration found in nature that act to confuse and deceive predators—the very processes of concealing and revealing that lie behind Hill’s practice as a painter. In this new body of work, these patterns are brought into shallow interior spaces inhabited by other forms and presences to assert a new painterly and psychological complexity.

Georgie Hill is an artist based in Auckland. Feint is her first solo exhibition in a public gallery.
