We are proud to introduce a new annual concert series entitled Hear & Far. In this fresh initiative the orchestra celebrates home-grown contemporary compositions, alongside the works of international composers in a concert dedicated to Modern Masters. In Harmonielehre John Adams makes ‘a statement of belief in the power of tonality’. Taking its title from Schönberg’s influential harmony treatise of the same name, this work was composed after an 18-month dry spell and signalled an important shift in Adams’s music. John Psathas composed Orpheus in Rarohenga to mark the 50th anniversary of one of New Zealand’s most accomplished choral ensembles - the Orpheus Choir Of Wellington. In this work for choir and orchestra, we chart the Transit of Venus, the death of Captain Cook and his journey into Rarohenga - the underworld.

Harmonielehre searches for connections between minimalist gestures and the decadent sound world of the late nineteenth century. It is a work that is wonderfully strange yet completely riveting and in John Psathas’s Orpheus in Rarohenga we enjoy a complementary vitality and exhilarating vibrancy. This concert will be brought to life in the hands of the New Zealand conductor Tecwyn Evans. His wealth of experience in both vocal and orchestral repertoires will be met by some of New Zealand’s finest singers.
