Part of the Matariki Festival ’13. For full event listings visit

Across four thought-provoking workshops, William Tamakehu Davis, born and raised in Orākei, will share local stories taught to him by his Ngati Whatua tupuna (ancestors).
These workshops will focus on learning the purpose and meaning of Matariki, while practicing tikanga Maori through the sharing of local purakau (ancient stories), haka (dance), waiata (songs) and whakatauaki (proverbs).
Participants will be introduced to traditional concepts such as whakawhanaungatanga, pepeha, powhiri, karakia, tapu, noa and mana. Attendees will have the opportunity to weave baskets, sing a waiata, and learn how to do the perfect hongi while finding out more about rongoa and the practice of Maori Tai Chi.
At the end of the four workshops there will be a hikoi over Orakei and a discussion about the history of Tamaki Makaurau with participants having the opportunity to share their own stories about this beautiful city.

Advance booking required.

Presented by William Tamakehu Davis.
