Inflorescence
Definition:

'A flowering; the putting forth and unfolding of blossoms.'

Artists’ statements:
“This exhibition, Inflorescence, explores the theme of transience and the fragility of nature and is largely based around the Peony.

Chosen for its folds and crevices, the voluptuous Peony poses an artistic challenge. By rendering of light and shade and its preoccupation with changing objects according to the time of day, the work follows the theme of Memento Mori. The Peonies become symbols of life and death, in which flowers play the central role as reminders of our own mortality.”

“The works for this exhibition, Inflorescence, are part of an ongoing investigation into colonization and the impact of exotic flora and fauna on the New Zealand environment.

The struggle for survival and the delicate balance between species are the focus. A number of extraordinary and often paradoxical relationships, some mutualistic and others parasitic are depicted in this series of works.”
