Jonathan Tanner began violin studies at age 6 in Motueka, winning many competitions at the Nelson School of Music in his younger years. At age 16 he moved to Christchurch where he continued his studies with Stephen Larsen and was successful not only in leading the Burnside High School Orchestra but also making the National Finals of the Secondary Schools Chamber Music Competition twice. A performing career was never the plan - Jonathan moved to Wellington to undertake a Bachelor of Music with the intention of becoming a high school music teacher. There he studied with Helene Pohl, first violinist of the New Zealand String Quartet, and Vesa Matti-Leppanen, concertmaster of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

It wasn't long before he was given many opportunities above his expectations and by half way through his degree he was set on becoming a performer. Within four years he had completed his Bachelor's degree, a Postgraduate Diploma, played in the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Dunedin Southern Sinfonia, and become a member of Orchestra Wellington. He had also led the Wellington Youth Orchestra, the New Zealand School of Music Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra for their concert with Plácido Domingo.

His string quartets have performed concerts for Chamber Music New Zealand and the Adam International Chamber Music Festival and also participated in masterclasses with the Takács,Tokyo, Prazák, Penderecki, Lafayette and New Zealand String Quartets.

Last year he was a member of The World Youth Orchestra in Italy and during his travels met some teachers with whom he wanted to undertake his Masters studies. He was offered a place at the Royal Northern College in Manchester and Bern University of the Arts, the latter of which he has accepted and will begin studying this month. Through these studies, Jonathan is preparing himself for a career as a professional violinist and hopes to perform in a wide variety of ensembles and styles.
