Prize-winning Young String Quartet In Waikanae

The Waikanae Music Society will close its 2013 concert season on Sunday 29 September with a performance from the award-winning Lazarus String Quartet. Winners of the 2010 ROSL Arts/ Pettman Scholarship, Emma Yoon, Julianne Song, Lindsay McLay and Alice Gott are all graduates of the University of Canterbury, and started playing together in various ensembles at a young age. The quartet is currently studying in a special String Quartet Programme at The University of Music, Drama and Media in Hannover, Germany.

Of particular interest to Kapiti concert-goers is the fact that two members of the quartet – cellist Alice Gott and viola player Lindsay McLay – are former recipients of scholarships from the Waikanae Music Society Charitable Trust for Young Musicians. It is rewarding for the Society to see the young musicians they have assisted returning as professionals.

The Lazarus String Quartet has performed in Germany as well as in festivals in New Zealand, France, Poland and the UK. They also regularly travel to France, where they participate in the ProQuartet Association programme of professional string quartet training, festivals and concerts. In May 2013, the quartet made their debut at the Salle Gaveau in Paris. They are also current holders of the Yehudi Menuhin “Live Music Now” Scholarship in Hannover.

Back in New Zealand for a country-wide Chamber Music New Zealand tour, they will present a popular programme of works by Haydn (String Quartet Opus 20, No 2), Beethoven (String Quartet Opus 18, No 2) and Brahms (String Quartet Opus 51, No1).

The concert, in the Waikanae Memorial Hall, starts at 2.30pm. Door sales will be available or tickets can be bought at Waikanae New World, Moby Dickens Books in Paraparaumu Beach or at Lush Design Gallery in Raumati. Enquiries are welcome on 04 905 6070 or for more information visit
