Leigh Business Community and Leigh Volunteer Fire Brigade will host a guided coastal walk to celebrate the upgrade of the Goat Island coastal walking track by the Department of Conservation and raise funds for the Leigh Fire Brigade.

Guided walks will starts adjacent to the Auckland University Marine Discovery Centre. Although hilly, the well-formed track can easily be walked by people with a reasonable level of fitness. There are amazing views of the coast out to the Hen and Chicken Islands, Mokohinau Islands and Whangarei Heads. The track passes through a native bush reserve and finishes at an area known as Tabletop Reef. The views here include Little Barrier (Hauturu) Island and Cape Rodney. At an easy pace this walk will take around 90 minutes return.

Walkers can continue on with their guide to complete a farm loop before rejoining the main track which will add around 30-45 minutes.

The guided walks start from 9am, then at regular intervals until midday. Knowledgeable guides will tell a little of the history of the marine reserve and the local fauna and flora. There will be numerous spot prizes donated by members of the Leigh Business Community and others. Prizes include bottles of wine, helicopter ride, accommodation, boat trip, entry to Marine Centre, books, icecreams and much, much more!

The second part of the day will be an Open Day by Leigh Volunteer Fire Brigade members, starting at 2.30pm. Firstly Warkworth Fire Brigade will demonstrate the removal of a patient from a motor vehicle using the equipment on their rescue tender at the old Leigh Hotel carpark. This will be followed by Leigh's volunteer firemen who will show their new compressed air foam fire truck at Leigh School grounds.

Afterwards a sausage sizzle and refreshments will be available at the Leigh Fire Station.
In the event of bad weather the events will be postponed by one week until Saturday 27th April.
All proceeds from the day will go towards the Leigh Volunteer Fire Brigade and its First Response Unit which handles all emergencies in the local area from medicals, fires, motor vehicle accidents, medical assists to St John Ambulance and even the occasional cat up a tree.
