Little Women is the much loved classic story by Louisa M Allcott and this adaptation, by Peter Clapham, is faithful to the book. Set in the time of the American Civil War, it tells the story of the 4 March girls: Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth, grappling with growing up under the guidance of their mother and long time housekeeper Hannah. There are highs and lows, sisterly love and rivalry, comedy and drama, warmth and hardship all combining in what makes this story as relevant today as when it was written.

The female characters are all strongly portrayed from the girls, their mother Marmee who is a woman of strong character, Hannah is the glue for them all, and there is Aunt March, who is not to be trifled with. The introduction of 2 young men into their lives make for fun as well as complications in the family home.

The story It is part autobiographical, Allcott's writing has been compared to Dickens and gives insight as to what life was like in America during the 1860s..

Stageworks Otago aims to donate 50% of any profits to charity. The profits from Little Women will be donated to Edmund Rice Camps.
