Dave Owen from the Hamilton Astronomical Society will present ‘The history and significance of Matariki and what it means to astronomers today’.

The star cluster Matariki (The Pleiades) has been an important celestial object for various cultures throughout history. As a seasonal marker, a navigation aid, a weather predictor and a source of great stories, Matariki provides both practical and intangible benefits.

In this talk we examine the history and significance of Matariki, and what it means to astronomers today.

Supported by Tuurangawaewae Trust Board and the Hamilton Astronomical Society. With thanks to Creative New Zealand.
