Darren Parsons, Fisheries Marine Ecologist at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) tells you all you ever wanted to know about snapper, from its ecology to life history and fisheries, especially in the Hauraki Gulf.

The snapper is New Zealand’s favourite fish. Valued for a variety of reasons, snapper represents an important and conspicuous part of the inshore waters around northern New Zealand. Fisheries for snapper have existed from as early as the 13th century.

Listen as Darren describes the evolution of these fisheries from the giant seine nets used by Maori in the 1800’s, through to the high value export markets of today. Also in the talk will be the life history of the snapper and some of the science that has been conducted including a description of tagging studies and movement behaviour, growth rates, important habitats for juvenile snapper and the assessment of recreational fisheries.
