A group of artists bring their work together to create this unique exhibition to honour pregnant mothers.

A trail braking art exhibition at the Yvonne Rust Gallery.

You, I, and everyone else we all spent the first period of our lives inside pregnant mothers. Magical!

We are staging this exhibition to celebrate pregnancy, and to honour our mothers.

People in prehistory carved fertility symbols, but around 20 centuries ago artists stopped depicting pregnant ladies. The old Greeks and Romans carved beautiful sculpture of Goddesses, amongst those the Goddesses of war, and of the hunt. Goddesses could not be shown pregnant! The Greeks carved columns in the form of young maidens, supporting the roofs of temples; caryatids. Those too should not be pregnant. Later, since the early days of Christianity, artist could not show a pregnant Virgin Mary, nor pregnant saints. That just wasn’t done.

During all those early centuries only few painters have, just once or twice painted pregnant ladies. Painters like Van Eyck, Klimt, Chagall and maybe two of three others. Almost no major sculptors that we know of ever depicted the subject. Not good enough!

We believe this unique exhibition is badly overdue. Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful and most important events in our lives. About time we artists acknowledges that.

Regards,

The Exhibitors.
