Nathan Haines Quartet concert at the Titirangi Festival 2013.

The Festival Club this year will stage two major concerts and be hosted by our own ‘gem of a venue’ Titirangi RSA.

Saturday sees the Festival club play host to one of NZ’s all time great musicians, the incomparable ‘Nathan Haines’. Nathan’s ‘Shift Left’ is still NZ’s all-time best selling jazz album. He has a huge international reputation and has recorded with the likes of Damon Albarn and Jamiroquai. He will be bringing the group that performed on his acclaimed recent album ‘the poets embrace’. Local songstress, Sarah Macombee joins the Saturday night lineup and anyone who has seen her perform will know that her voice and songs are strikingly original, and that she has a commanding onstage presence.

Friday night’s lineup features a remarkable collaboration called ‘Fabulous Arabia’ which is James Milne (aka Lawrence Arabia), Mike Fabulous (Black Seeds), Riki Gooch (Trinity Roots), Toby Laing (Fat Freddy’s Drop) and Tom Watson (Cassette/Head like a Hole). James Milne is an award winning songwriter so expect this show to stimulate the mind as well as getting the hips moving. The Friday night lineup is further enhanced by a performance by local electronica/songwriting maestro ‘SJD’ who will be presenting selected classics from his back catalogue as well as songs from the critically acclaimed new album, ‘Electric Wasteland’ voted in Timeout’s top 30 albums of 2012. These will both be great nights of music and tickets will be extremely limited.

The cornerstone event of the festival is the ever popular and free, Village Day. This year Village day will be centred in the main carpark (Village Square) between Hardware and Vevo cafes – expect loads of family friendly activities in this area with stage performances alternating with open-air groups such as a samba drumming troupe ‘SambaTron’ from Hamilton, the wonderful Mhara Marimbas (fresh from performing at WOMAD), our own Dixieland jazz group ‘The Lex Pistols’ and internationally recognised French/dub exponents ‘the Mamaku Project’. There will also be face-painting, a colouring competition, stilt-walkers and street performers all set to a brilliant musical backdrop. The whole village will be pumping out the great coffee and food specials all day with free music in and around the cafés. Meanwhile a workshop programme in the Titirangi Memorial hall, run by many of the performers, will be giving local families a chance to learn ukulele, samba drumming, Indian tabla and much more.

Village day will be a great day for the family and anyone who wants to experience some of the best music West Auckland has to offer, and perhaps even have a go at beginning to learn an instrument.

Sunday 14th, the final day of the festival, sees the ‘Waitakere city orchestra and friends’ present a day of classical music. The day begins with a free Suzuki method workshop by Sasha Witten-Hanna which is followed by a violin masterclass by renowned violinist Elena Abramova. The day's programme will culminate in a chamber music concert which will feature the Heartstrings duo, Nikau Quartet, Adrianna Lis, Elena Abramova, Greg McGarity and Donald Nicholls. The concert's featured works will include Mozart’s clarinet quintet, Bach’s B minor flute suite and works by Dowland, Villa Lobos, Piazzolla and Rebecca Clarke.

Tickets for all concerts are available through the Titirangi Pharmacy, Titirangi RSA or online through Eventfinder.
