The internationally awarded New Zealand Secondary Students’ Choir, one of just three nationally auditioned choirs, has had a few members from Tauranga in its 28 year history. But never has it performed there. This will all change on July 20 when the 2013-14 NZSSC will perform at the Bethlehem College Performing Arts Centre, following a week of rehearsals at the college.
The choir, led by Musical Director Andrew Withington of Christchurch, sings a wide variety of music from classical choral to jazz, folk and music from New Zealand and the Pacific. Previous international awards include The People’s Choice Award at the 2010 International Choral Kathaumixw, British Columbia, Canada, and Champion Mixed Voice Youth Choir at the 2006 World Choral Olympics in China.Past performance reviews include:
“This is choral singing at its best. One would be hard-pressed to find an
adult choir in New Zealand as good as this.” - Rosemary Collier, www.middle-c.org, April 2012;
“The homogenous sound of these 60-plus singers, auditioned countrywide
each two years, is nothing short of astonishing.”- Peter Williams, Hawkes Bay Today, Jan 2012.
