Queen’s Birthday Weekend 2013 marks the 40th anniversary of the inauguration of Maori Writers and Artists, the organisation that later became known as Nga Puna Waihanga. What soon became an arts movement that covered all aspects of Maori creativity was initiated by icons such as Hone Tuwhare, Arnold Manaaki Wilson, Dame Georgina Kirby, Rowley Habib, Fred Graham, Katarina Mataira, Cliff Whiting, Selwyn Muru, Para Matchitt, Kura Rewiri, Haare Williams and many others.

As young Maori creators they had the support of each other at a time when the European vision and expression of the arts dominated in the universities and art schools of this country. As a consequence of these hui (gatherings) a strong voice for Maori art developed. John Miller was part of some of the early gatherings and his images, with Gil Hanley’s, record some of that story.
