With guest conductor Peter Walls and soloist Erin Helyard (harpsichord and fortepiano)

This concert features one of New Zealand’s most established early music practitioners and one of its newest in a programme of music by CPE Bach and Mozart. Join us for a Mozart piano concert, a little night music and the extroverted music of CPE Bach – all just beyond the baroque!

Peter Walls has an international reputation as an early music specialist and has published numerous articles on historical performance practice and in 2003 he published a book History, Imagination and the Performance of Music. Peter played Baroque violin in the Academy of Ancient Music in the 1970s and was subsequently Music Director of New Zealand’s The Baroque Players for many years and of The Tudor Consort from 1993 until 1999. Peter has been Music Director of Opus Orchestra since 2004 and has conducted 'Close Encounters' programmes with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Erin Helyard has been praised as a virtuosic and eloquent soloist as well as an inspired and versatile conductor. Erin graduated in harpsichord performance from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with first-class honours and the University Medal. He completed his Masters in 2005 in fortepiano performance at McGill University, Montreal, completing a PhD in musicology at the same institution in 2011. In Sydney, Erin is a co-artistic director and founder of Pinchgut Opera and has conducted acclaimed performances and from 2003 to 2011 Erin was a central member of the award-winning Montreal-based Ensemble Caprice. He is currently Lecturer in Historical Performance at the New Zealand School of Music.
