Dr Erin Helyard, NZSM's Lecturer in Historical Performance and Classical Performance (Keyboard), presents a concert at the school's fortepiano (Adlam after Walter, 1796). The concert focuses around the works being written by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1803.

“1803 marked the beginning of a period of rejuvenation for Beethoven," Erin explains, "who had struggled for years to come to grips with his encroaching deafness. Not only do we witness a newfound exploration of large-scale forms in compositions like the Third Symphony (‘Eroica’), but we can also discern in his intimate miniatures for piano a more unfamiliar Beethoven, interested in whimsical experimentation with tonality, style, and genre.”

The programme consists of: Bagatelles pour le Pianoforte, Op. 33;
Praeludium in F minor, WoO 55; 6 Variations pour le Pianoforte, composées et dédiées a Madame la Princesse Odeschalchi, Op. 34 – all by Beethoven and Prelude in E-flat major, Op. 67 No. 19 by his contemporary Hummel.

Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music is a joint enterprise of Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington.
