Where: Adam Concert Room, NZSM Kelburn Campus, Victoria University, Gate 7, Kelburn Parade, Wellington

Through the generous assistance of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and NZSO Foundation, visiting international percussionist Colin Currie will give a masterclass for NZSM Postgraduate Diploma student Dorothy Raphael and two guest students: Sam Rich (Auckland) and Andrew Bell (Christchurch).

Colin Currie has been the driving force behind new percussion repertoire for more than a decade and a foremost contributor to contemporary music as the soloist of choice for composers from Steve Reich to Rautavaara. Acclaimed for his virtuosity and musical integrity, Currie is a solo and chamber artist at the peak of his powers. A UK resident, he is soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the London Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Concertgebouw, Philadelphia and Philharmonia orchestras. Commentators have praised Currie's 'athletic percussionism, compulsive showmanship and deep musicality'.

Colin Currie is currently touring with the NZSO's Bold Worlds programme in which he is giving the Southern Hemisphere premiere of Sieidi, Finnish composer Kalevi Aho’s new Solo Percussion and Orchestra Concerto.

The NZSO Foundation Masterclasses provide opportunities for young tertiary level musicians to learn from the distinguished international artists who perform as guests with the NZSO. The masterclasses are hosted by New Zealand’s tertiary music schools and feature students from the host school.

The masterclass is free and observers are welcome.
