In a generous collaboration through Chamber Music New Zealand, three students will gain the benefit of a Beethoven Sonatas masterclass session with outstanding New Zealand pianist Michael Houstoun.

The students and their repertoire are:
- Leonardo Coghini: Beethoven Sonata op.31, no.3, first movement (student at Kapiti College, student of Richard Mapp)
- Nicole Ting: Beethoven Sonata op.10, no.2, second movement/first movement (first year student at NZSM, student of Jian Liu)
- Jonathan Lane: Beethoven Sonata op.10, no.3, first movement (student at Wellington College, student of Richard Mapp)

Michael Houstoun famously chose to return to New Zealand after his spectacular sweep of final prizes in the world’s three most prestigious piano competitions – the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (1973), Leeds Competition (1975) and Tchaikovsky Competition (1982). He has been based here ever since and is hugely in demand for concertos with our finest orchestras and for chamber concerts the length of the country. In 2012 he was appointed CNZM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for services as a pianist, and is currently engaged on part 2 of a 'Beethoven reCYCLE' series for Chamber Music New Zealand in which he will perform all 32 of Beethoven's Piano Sonatas. He is recording the whole cycle in the Adam Concert Room on the NZSM's new Steinway D for later release by Rattle Records.

See the CMNZ website above for more information about Michael's Beethoven reCYCLE tour.
