This weekend, Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music partners with the Wellington Chamber Music Trust, the Confucius Institute at Victoria University and the Ministry of Culture, China in presenting a concert of virtuosic masterpieces from two superb pianists: Xiang Zou from Beijing and NZSM Piano Lecturer Jian Liu. The concert will feature the complete Etudes by Ligeti and Debussy. Ligeti’s 18 Etudes are not often performed in concert because of their technical challenges and Debussy’s 12 Etudes, dating from the end of his life, are also seldom heard in concert, Debussy himself having considered them ‘fiendishly difficult.’

This Performer's Workshop session features these two superb pianists discussing the process of readying themselves for a performance of these challenging works. The workshop is free, open to the public and observers are welcome – especially those wanting to gain insight into these works before the performance on Sunday.

Xiang Zou is a member of the piano faculty at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and guest Professor at Wuhan Conservatory. Jian Liu is Lecturer in Piano Studies at the Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music and has recently completed his DMA in piano performance through Yale University, USA.

Event admission - This is a free event.
