A love story with no words.

LAB Theatre is back with an exciting return season of One by One, an enchanting silent theatre show that tells the tragi-comic love story of modern-day clowns Bonnie and Marty – two dreamy, sensitive individuals drawn together after a chance encounter in a local park. In their efforts to find love, Bonnie and Marty endlessly miss each other, get caught up in a succession of madcap misunderstandings, dance the night away and deal with the struggle of not being able to get what they want.

In cahoots with an inventive and playful musical soundtrack created live on stage, Bonnie and Marty take us by the hand and lead us into a silent movie world of over-the-top walks, jaw-drops, conspiratorial grins, wide-eyed gazes and exaggerated gestures of kindness and restraint – a magical, music-filled world where physical expression matters most.

One by One “clowns around, sits on laps, dances with strangers, toots, tweets, crashes and tinkles – and thoroughly entertains.” - Lexie Matheson, Theatreview, 2011.

Flirtatious keyboard, cheeky guitar strums and seductive wind instrumentation become delightful accomplices to Bonnie’s and Marty’s exploits.

One by One’s large-as-life soundscape is based on Yo no se que me han hecho tus ojos, a delightfully haunting tango by Uruguayan composer Francisco Canaro.

A show with no words but with a big and generous heart, One by One creates a magical and touching experience for audiences of all ages, shapes and sizes!

One by One is directed by LAB Theatre’s co-founder and master clown Pedro Ilgenfritz in collaboration with The Jews Brothers band musicians John Ellis and Nigel Gavin and set designer Rachel Walker. The show features company co-founder Katie Burson (Bonnie) and new LAB member Cole Jenkins (Marty).

LAB Theatre is an Auckland company dedicated to actor training and the development of original theatre shows. LAB’s work is located in the rich space between the traditional disciplines of comedy and tragedy; in a contemporary, innovative territory inhabited by clowns and tricksters.

LAB’s first show Alfonsina (2010) toured Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin and was performed at Vertice Brazil: International Women in Theatre Festival 2010, receiving critical acclaim.

One by One (2011) is the company’s second project. After a successful season in Auckland (2011), One By One is returning for the Auckland Fringe Festival 2013 in association with STAMP at THE EDGE.
