Spanning more than a decade of Shigeyuki Kihara’s art production (2001-2013), Undressing the Pacific, a mid-career survey show, focuses on a number of this Samoan-born artist’s key series. Kihara is an interdisciplinary artist who explores the ways in which the people and landscape of the Pacific are portrayed from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Her inquiry subverts late nineteenth century ethnographic and touristic images of Samoan ‘belles’ and redresses the tropes of the dusky maiden and the Pacific Paradise.
