The Renaissance Singers present a light-hearted Sunday afternoon concert in early spring, "Singing with a Smile". All seriousness will be set aside for a first half line-up of numbers that might be considered encore material in their lightness of tone, and even levity.

The featured work is a dramatic cantata, for this is how Gilbert and Sullivan described the fruit of their first collaboration, "Trial by Jury". Drawing on his training and brief practice as a barrister, Gilbert depicted a 'breach of promise' trial going in an unexpected direction. In the Victorian era, a man could be required to pay compensation should he fail to marry a woman to whom he was engaged. The witty, tuneful and very 'English' piece was to launch the famous series of 13 collaborative works that came to be known as the Savoy Operas.

It's plot is typically ludicrous, but the characters behave as if the events were perfectly reasonable. The humour and catchy melodies allowed the nineteenth century audience to laugh with recognition at the pointed barbs at society’s hypocrisy, and especially that of those in authority.

The Renaissance Singers present a semi-staged version, in keeping with the cantata concept. The depth of talent in the choir has afforded an opportunity for the solo parts to be drawn from its number. These include the learned judge who has risen to his status through graft and dishonesty, the plaintiff whose motivation is making money, the defendant whose defence is that he is of such base character that the plaintiff would never be happy with him, and the plaintiff’s potential bridesmaids, The choir appears in the roles of jury and the public gallery.

Come and enjoy an entertaining Sunday afternoon!
