The Streeton Piano Trio, the prize-winning Australian ensemble that thrilled the Waikanae Music Society audience last year, will be making a welcome return.

In 2011 the Streeton Piano Trio won the Musica Viva Chamber Music Competition, one of Australia’s most coveted awards. For the last two years they have held the position of ensemble-in-residence at the prestigious European Chamber Music Academy, a position that has just been renewed for another year. This enviable appointment gives them access to concert engagements and tuition with some of the greatest musical names in Europe - a wealth of musical experience that really shows in the musicianship and polish of their playing.

Emma Jardine (violin) and Benjamin Kopp (piano) sadly will not be joined on this current Australasian tour by their cellist Martin Smith. Martin was hit by a taxi in Berlin and has a broken wrist which, although healing, will not be ready for this tour. However, his replacement is something of a celebrity - one of Australia’s leading cellists Julian Smiles, whose stellar career in chamber music includes the position of Principal Cellist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Australia Ensemble and the internationally acclaimed Goldner String Quartet.

The trio’s popular programme includes some of the favourite works in the piano trio repertoire, starting with a Haydn trio followed by Schubert’s great B Flat Major Trio. After the interval a brief interlude by Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin will prepare the way for Mendelssohn’s romantic masterpiece, the Piano Trio in C minor.

The Waikanae Music Society is grateful to the Deane Endowment Trust for their support of this concert.

The concert is in the Waikanae Memorial Hall, starting at 2.30pm. Door sales will be available or tickets can be bought from Waikanae New World, Moby Dickens Books (Pm Beach) and Lush Design Gallery in Raumati. Enquiries are welcome on 04 905 6070 or visit www.waikanaemusic.org
