Thames is known as "The Gateway to the Coromandel" and is only 90 minutes from Auckland. It has a rich history of gold mining, kauri logging, machinery manufacture and much more. Situated in the beautiful Coromandel, Thames town has many buildings and relics still existing today, from a gold-mining stamper battery to lovely old churches built in the 1800s. In its heyday Thames was one of New Zealand's largest towns, with 18,000 inhabitants, over 100 hotels, and three theatres. The historical Museum has excellent displays of the goldrush days, the School of Mines has minerals and mining equipment on display, and the "Bella Street Pumphouse" has a fascinating history, and it conducts gold mine tours.

The beautiful Kauaeranga Valley is the door to The Pinnacles where you can visit an original kauri dam, climb the steep pinnacles, and stay overnight in the "hut" amongst the clouds.

There are many walking tracks around Thames, some to giant kauri trees and swimming holes. There is a rail trail for bike riding, and a small gauge railway for train enthusiasts, a butterfly house, and a magnificent coastline of pohutukawa trees. The waters in the gulf are full of prime fishing spots.

The Festival has many activities happening during a two-week period from 8th to 24th March 2013. Some include Model A muster, Heritage Ball, Heritage walks, Home-brew competition, Fashion Show, Surf2Firth race over the hills, craft workshops, music performances, etc. Visit the website for a full description of events.
