The New Zealand Premiere of: The Drowning Girls

“… it will take your breath away …”

A Little Box At The Top Of The Stairs presents the New Zealand premiere of the critically acclaimed play The Drowning Girls.

This powerful script will take your breath away as it relives the true story of George Joseph Smith, a notorious scoundrel who drowned three of his wives in their baths to collect their life insurance policies. The Brides of The Bathtub was an early 20th century murder case that captured the public and tested the United Kingdom’s forensic justice system. Smith accomplished his gruesome scam three times in three years, but justice has a way of catching up with people.

Bessie, Alice and Margaret each have two things in common: they are married to George Joseph Smith and they are dead. Surfacing from the bathtubs they were drowned in, the women reflect on their misconceptions of love, married life and the not-so-happily ever after.

The Drowning Girls premiered in 1999 at The Edmonton Fringe Festival, with subsequent productions in Alberta and across Canada. The play has been nominated for, and won, several awards and this will be its New Zealand Premiere.
