The inaugural New Zealand MTB coasting championships. There are no age or gender categories other than a minimum age of 10 years and parental permission required for those under 18. Entry fees will all be donated to the Rotorua Mountain Bike Club's trails fund.

Riders will coast their bikes without the use of any form of propulsion other than gravity [or a friendly wind] down a 1km course through the majestic Coastal Redwoods of the Tokorangi Forest in waves of 4 bikes and speeds in the region of 60-70 kph will be reached. The course surface is tarseal up until riders enter 'Hotseat Alley' up to the 'Sails' clearing.

Prizes will be awarded for the longest 'coast' and for the best male and best female costumes. The following rules apply:

Rules
1. Frames must accommodate wheels of 20” upwards in diameter: There are separate categories for BMX bikes, other Solo bikes, and multi-rider bikes [tandems, triples, tagalongs]. Multi-rider bikes must have a seat, handlebars, and set of cranks for each occupant.
2. Maximum number of wheels is three.
3. You can apply as much weight to bike or body as you like but if you jettison it you will be red-carded [disqualified]. Note: the final section is slightly uphill
4. The minimum tyre width is 2.0 inches. Only exception is for the BMX category.
5. Chains must be ‘dropped off’ the front chainrings so that they can play no part in the propulsion of the bike.
6. The only form of propulsion allowed at the start is from a single push from the one foot on the ground.
7. No form of rider propulsion after the start is allowed. This includes pumping, wheel wiggling or any other method – or you risk being red-carded by one of the ‘Deciders’. Note: This does not preclude any form of costume that might act as a sail in certain wind conditions.
8. Outside assistance in any form is not permitted.
9. A helmet approved for cycling or anything more extreme [e.g. motorcycling, flying choppers, etc] must be worn.
10. Riders must not restrict the progress of any other rider by holding on or any other method.
11. Riders must be aged 10 years or older.
12. The Redwoods Coast ‘Deciders’ [judiciary] will not entertain any form of protest.
13. The event will proceed in all weathers other than the most extreme winds.
14. Once all riders have completed their first ‘Coast’ there is the opportunity for further attempts if time permits, but no riding up the course during initial runs is permitted.
