Tom Woods - conductor
Diana Doherty - oboe

Farr - The Nor’West Arch
Strauss - Oboe Concerto
Stravinsky - Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring)

Originally commissioned by the Christchurch Arts Festival for Brass Band, Gareth Farr’s Nor’West Arch is a memorial to the victims of the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake. This orchestral version was adapted for Symphony Orchestra in remembrance of the victims of the 2011 Queensland floods and premiered by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

Composed in 1945, an elderly Strauss was inspired to write his concerto for oboe through a chance conversation with an American soldier who pre-war had been the Principal Oboe at the Pittsburg Symphony.

This work combines gentleness with wit and offers the soloist countless beguiling melodies. Joining us for this performance is Diana Doherty Principal Oboe for the Sydney Symphony.

When premiered on the 29th May 1913, Parisenne audiences were so shocked by the angular and provocative choreography of Diaghilev’s Ballet Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) that a near riot ensued. Stravinsky’s score however received a more enthusiastic reception with critics recognising the composers genius. The Rite of Spring is now considered one of the most significant works of the twentieth century. It remains as fresh and alive today as when it was first performed one hundred years ago.

With an orchestra of over 90 the CSO will be joined with musicians from the University of Canterbury and the Christchurch Youth Orchestra.

This concert is in Association with the Christchurch Arts Festival.
